Village Walk 6 September and 4 October

This note from Guy and Jacqui….

As you many of you know it is John Forster’s funeral on the 6 September, and it is also the the day of the village walk. In view of the fact that John was so instrumental in making the Village Walks happen it only seems appropriate that we continue with his initiative, particularly as a memorial on the day of his funeral. So we will be meeting as usual at 6 pm on The Green for a short walk that circumnavigates that village that John was so active in promoting.

John was very anxious that we continued with the tradition of the walks and he had already made arrangements with Farmer Gow’s for the October 4th to visit them and tour the sculpture exhibition. Because the nights are starting to close in we will be meeting at 5:45 pm to walk to Farmer Gow’s, alternatively you can go there directly for a 6:00 pm start to the tour.

Thanks

Guy and Jacqui

John Forster’s funeral service.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

By now many of you will have heard the terribly sad news about John losing his brave battle against cancer last Saturday morning.

His extraordinary energy, sense of humour, and passion for our village will be hugely missed and the family wants to thank everyone for the lovely comments on John’s FB page from which they are drawing such comfort at this sad time.

They also want to make sure everyone knows about his funeral which will take place at 1.45pm on Tuesday 6th September 2016 at St Mary’s Church in Longcot. It will be followed by a private cremation at Kingsdown Crematorium.

There will be a reception after at John’s local: The King and Queen.

The family have asked: “Wear what you like, but it would be rather lovely if people wore hats. Old or new, cap or topper, John prized them all.

Thwe family have also asked for No Flowers – but instead for donations in John’s memory to St Mary’s Church Longcot. John was involved in fundraising for the church and was keen that it remain at the heart of the community where it has stood for 800 years.

As John knew many, many people – it would be enormously helpful if you could let the Funeral Directors know if you will be attending so that the family and they have some idea of numbers.

Please contact: The Co-operative Funeral Directors, Cardinal House, Brewery Street, Highworth, Swindon, SN6 7NJ. Tel: 01793 764664.

The 2016 White Horse Show at Uffington

I am reminded that the Bank Holiday approaches – and with it that best of all traditional summer events, The Uffington White Horse Show. The Car Parks open at 9:00am if you want to be fast out of the traps, and the gates open at 10:00 am.

All the usual fun plus this year, a spectacular display on the Sunday of some nine vintage WWI aircraft, dog fighting and performing acrobatics over the showground. On Bank Holiday Monday, time moves on and there is a display of Hurricanes and Spitfires and throughout it all the main arena will be displaying other great feats of dexterity and many unusual and exciting skills, with dog agility, geese-herding, The Royal Signals Motorbike Display team and so much more.

But to really get a feel for the programme why not have a look at the organisers informative website HERE

Shrivenham Village Fete – Saturday 27th August – 1:00pm onwards

Don’t forget that our neighbours will be holding their village fete on Saturday 27th August from 1:00pm at The Recreation Ground. Their leaflets suggest a huge range of activities and this correspondent will definitely be attending.

Savage Skills; Punch & Judy; Fancy Dress Competition; Fund Dog show, many stalls; tons of food and drink from various stalls and bars, plus of course all the usual home-made goodies that make the Fete such fun. I’m also looking forward to seeing the Classic Cars, but I suspect that Go-Karts might not come in a larger size!

The Shrivenham Village fete website can be found HERE
